Potty talk

I've done something I think I may regret. We're trying to get Sarah out of diapers, and so far she's been pretty resistant. It started out well enough - we've been talking about using the potty since before our beach trip, how after the kids started school she would learn to use the potty. The day we left for the beach she was dry when Matt woke her up & she went for the first time. After we returned she'd used it once or twice, but lately whenever we mentioned it she'd tell us no. In no uncertain terms.

We've bought Minnie Mouse panties, watched potty movies, read potty books, talked about all the people she knows who use the potty. Nothing.

Last night after her bath I had her try on a pair of underpants. Just to see how they feel. Of course, she loved them. and then didn't want to take them off. and had a fit when I made her. and then got very upset when I wouldn't let her wear them over her pull-up (because I'm not playing THAT game.) She did seem to get over it and I got her all tucked in last night with no trouble.

15 minutes ago she arrived downstairs, panties in hand, ready to use the potty. In a wet pull-up. After trying (with no result) to go and having a discussion about how you don't want to tinkle on Minnie, she's now wearing her panties & sitting on a fairly water-resistant blanket watching Clifford. I have a pretty good idea about how I will be spending my day. Did I mention yet that Matt left for Hawaii for the week yesterday morning? He gets back Saturday afternoon. I will be Extra Harried Mom this week. Doing lots of laundry.

***** UPDATED *****

Two hours later and Sarah is back in her pull-up (her choice). She does NOT want to use the potty. (sigh)

  1. There's just something extra difficult about potty-training number three. We finally accomplished that feat wih our third. Maybe it's because we are so busy doing everything else, we don't see all the signs or have all the patience we used to for the first. Oh well, they won't be in diapers in first grade, that's my motto!

  2. Good luck - I think my little one will need it, but I've just been holding out until I have 3 days in a row where I can just concentrate on her. Hmmm. . . . not sure if that will ever happen.

  3. I'm struggling with my girl too. Yesterday...she took her diaper off during nap time and then pOOped in her crib and then slept next to it.

    AGH!!!!

    I wanna go to Hawaii....

  4. Wow! Girls can be stubborn, can't they? My husband is gone for the next few days too, but luckily my kids are all potty trained! I just have to juggle their schedules and mine alone!

  8. Ah man, the potty is a difficult transition. Hopefully it'll just click with her soon!!! (VERY soon for your sake)

    Hang in there, mama!

  9. SO funny...she'll do it in her own time...you know they have a mind of their own. Don't bring it up for two weeks and start praising one of your other children outloud....and see what happens. Don't say one word to her about it....no joke.

  11. Oh my goodness, we totally went through this for 3 months. We were in pull ups and she never peed in the potty at all. It was so frustrating, 30 mins on a potty, get up and pee one minute later in her pull up. Finally she peed in the potty after 3 months and now will pee all the time in there with no accidents, but no luck with the other, she will wait until nighttime and she has a diaper on! Extra Harried Mom - I get it my husband is gone to China for 9 days! I am exhausted already!

  12. Aw, Jen! Potty training...ugh!! With Kelly after she showed initial excitement...she didn't want anything to do with it. I just put it away in our storage area. After a few weeks she saw it and was all "Why my potty here?" Uh, cause you didn't want to use it. "No, no I DO!!". Brought the potty back up and I tell you she was going #2 6 times a day...just to use the potty. Amazing bowel control on her part ;)

Didn't want to ruin her fun by letting her know, eventually your bladder control will be gone...well, after children ;)

    Good Luck!!

  13. A few comments here. It makes me feel downright upset that you mommy of four who has already been through this is facing this frustration. I needed someone to tell me that there was something I was doing wrong.

I guess it is what all the books say - when they are ready they will go. Deaglan has no intention of going in the potty. I tried for several weeks using stickers to lure him there but he just wanted the stickers. I realized after about five weeks that we weren't progressing AT ALL:( So I stopped all potty stuff. My worry is that once I get pregnant (we have been trying for a few months) I will be too sick to try potty training him and then he'll be really old by the time I get around to it! Okay so I guess what I'm saying is this post struck a nerve:)

  16. I hate potty training. I was so over it by number 4 she did it herself! I woke up one morning to her having plastered the toilet in poo and she'd put on a pair of her older sisters knickers and that was that!

  17. Laura,

Shhh! Don't tell Jen our secrets. I want her to think I'm alone and bored here in Hawaii.

  18. Oh boy Jenn...I sure hope Sarah 'gets it' soon. I remember the frustration...what worked for us was waiting a bit...When Riley showed absolutely no interest at 2 years old...I waited and tried again at 2.5 and he seemed much more receptive. Good luck!

  19. I laughed OUT LOUD when I got the "fairly water resistant blanket" part...

we have a 2.5 year old...going potty on the potty at all times during the day and then hmmm, decided to stop. We have him back to "some" of the time. And we were debating underwear. I think we can wait. LOL.

  20. I had Madison basically OUT of Diaper (yippee) for about 2 weeks, then for some unknown reason started peeing and Pooping on my FLOORS! Seriosly, she would take of her undies, go on my floor, put the undies BACK on, and go about her day! Let's just say I gave up after 5 days of this and thanked GOD for hard surface flooring.... I am so TRYINg to get rid of diapers.... I think next week sounds better.... Matt will be home right? Good luck girl!

  21. Oh the joys of potty-training. Makenna was so super easy, I don't know how it happened, but about 20 months she just started wanting to use the potty on her own. Shortly after she was completely trained. Now you've got me worried about Kam ;)

  22. We are also in the potty training phase. I, however, am not as strong as you! Little Boy wore his Elmo undies over a diaper for about a week :)
