Fit Friday

It's fit Friday and I'm supposed to run four miles again. There's a 100% chance of rain and thunderstorms with 13 to 20 mph winds. Gusts as high as 33. Maybe I'm not running today. Tomorrow is supposed to be sunny, but even windier. I think I'd rather run in a downpour than wind, you know? Last week's four miles were actually not bad. I was thinking the whole way, "the lungs are willing but the legs are weak", but I managed to run the whole way, and I was very happy to see my house when I got to the top of the last rise. I think I did it in about 40 minutes.

I'm at the end of week four of Hal Higdon's program and what do I have to show for it? I think maybe I've lost 2 lbs at the most - it's hard to say as it bobbles around so much with water retention & such. My tight jeans aren't so tight anymore and my legs aren't as jiggly - so that's a plus. Although yesterday morning Sarah came in while I was in the shower & peeked in - she laughed, "Mommy, I see your butt - it's big!"; Thanks, sweetheart :-)

When I was pregnant with Sarah & then Jason, we all went for walks together in the evening. Evie and William would be walking behind me and laugh, "Mommy - your butt's going up and down!" Yes, all my weight is stored in my seat and thighs, and it doesn't seem inclined to leave anytime soon (you know, because I might get pregnant during a famine - not!) Of course, the bag of almond M&Ms I ate last night is not helping - why do I sabotage myself this way??

Anyway - here I am at the tail end of week 4 with 4 weeks to go and I'm kind of discouraged. I'm a little run down from lack of sleep (kids!) and a stuffy nose, my arm still hurts from the tetanus shot, and I really don't feel like running in the wind. Or rain. And gosh that all sounds so whiney! At least the pain in my left foot went away. If you have any words of encouragement for me, I would love to hear them; for now, I'm off to refill my coffee mug and get started on my day.

  1. I always heard (and followed) this... I would tell myself, I will run for 15 minutes. If I gave it a full 15 minute effort and still was miserable and hated it - I stopped. 9 times out of 10, after 15 minutes I felt great and was glad I went. So, give a "courtesy 15 minute workout" and see where it takes you!! Good luck. I'll be thinking of you in the rain while I'm sitting working at my computer longing to do something outside. (Although if I wasn't working I probably wouldn't be working out ;) )

  2. I like what Jenna said. And I think I will apply it to my own workouts!

Is it going to rain all day? Will it be better later?

    Good Luck!

  3. That is great advice. And since I'm new here, I don't know if you're training for a specific distance, but I find that running for a number of minutes is less diffucult for me mentally. And then I'm usually pleasantly surprised after the fact when I figure the distance I actually ran.

Also, I have the opposite problem--the legs are willing but the lungs aren't!

Thanks for stopping by my blog. Glad to have a new friend :)

  4. It was a windy day! I managed to pump some gas. Try it tomorrow in the sun! Put some fun music on your ipod from your high school days to get you in a running mood.

  5. Oh, don't get discouraged. I am totally impressed with your progress. Keep it up, you make me want to get out and run too. :-)
